Meetings of Seward Co-op’s Board of Directors are open to any co-op owner. The next monthly board meeting is virtual and will be held Tuesday, Sept. 28. Co-op owners are welcome to observe; an advance RSVP is requested. The Sept. 28 meeting will include a 5-minute Co-op Owners Comment Period. The board of directors planned this in response to community members’ requests to address the board. Individual time allotment is dependent on number of owners who wish to speak. Our 2020 meeting featured a dynamic panel of artists and activists; and as a co-op we expressed our shared intention to articulate a vision of community that is free from white supremacy. Through conversation, song, and movement, the panel centered on the co-op’s role in the movement for racial justice and liberation in our communities—a movement that holds parallel values of abolition with cooperative history and principles. Celebrating 50 Years: Seward Co-op within the Broader Movement for Abolition and Liberation

This year’s meeting will feature Jessica Gordon Nembhard, Professor of Community Justice and Social Economic Development in the Department of Africana Studies at John Jay College, City University of New York and author of Collective Courage: A History of African American Cooperative Economic Thought and Practice. Jessica will join Seward Co-op owners, BOD members and local co-op innovators in conversation about how co-ops can be a manifestation of abolition.

The event will kick-off a year of exploring our own evolution as a co-op over the past 50 years—and who we want to be 50 years in the future.
