For every Vita Coco item purchased at Seward Co-op through Sept. 4, $1 will be designated to help build classrooms—up to $10,000!

Vita Coco’s mission is to lift 1 million people out of poverty through its Give, Grow, Guide program known as The Vita Coco Project.

Currently, Vita Coco is focused on Sri Lanka and the Philippines because they are two of the largest coconut producing regions in the world and where Vita Coco says it can make a bigger impact.

Through Vita Coco’s program partner HOPE, Vita Coco is building classrooms to provide students with a proper place to study and help encourage them to attend school more often.

Farmer to Farmer will be offering samples of its organic coffee and sharing its story at Seward Community Co-op in August and September.

Farmer to Farmer is a small Wisconsin-based nonprofit that was founded in 1989 and is currently working in Guatemala and Honduras. Farmer to Farmer works directly with family coffee farmers to buy their organic coffee for an above fair trade price.

According to Farmer to Farmer, the profits from the coffee sales go back to the farmers and help support various projects, including school scholarships for students in Santiago Atitlalan, Guatemala.

“We envision agriculture that is sustainable and respectful for the earth, and one that remains in the hands of the people who live on and work the land,” according to Farmer to Farmer. “We support grassroots agricultural projects that are democratically initiated and managed. Our decisions about a project are guided by respect that characterizes the relationship between friends.”

Farmer to Farmer says, “As an organization, we affirm the sacredness of the earth and work for and respect the rights of all people and cultures to self-determination.”

HP Hood LLC is voluntarily recalling a limited number of half-gallon cartons of refrigerated Vanilla Almond Breeze almondmilk because the product may contain milk, an allergen not listed on the label.

The product is safe to consume unless you have a milk allergy or sensitivity. According to HP Hood LLC, there has been one report of an allergic reaction, which did not require medical treatment or hospitalization.

The recall only applies to the following product: half-gallon (1.89 L) refrigerated Vanilla Almond Breeze almondmilk (item number: 10247, UPC: 41570 05621) with a use-by date of Sept. 2, 2018, with the following time stamps:

Seward Community Co-op will be a co-sponsor for a special event Aug. 16, 4-8 p.m., to celebrate the reopening of the 38th Street Bridge near the Friendship Store.

The hope is that family, friends and neighbors will gather and celebrate the reopening of this cornerstone bridge and to reconnect the neighborhoods and rebuild community divided by the bridge construction.

This will be a sit-down dinner on the bridge with kid-friendly activities, live music and more. The goal of the event is for neighbors from both sides of the bridge to meet in the middle for dinner and conversation.

The conversation, facilitated by Marnita’s Table, will furnish space for open dialogue and healing.

The dinner will be catered by Eat for Equity and will include halal, vegan and gluten-free options.

Seward Community Co-op is one of the sponsors of Open Streets Franklin 2018. Franklin Avenue will be blocked off from Portland Avenue to 28th Avenue South, opening up the roadway for people walking, biking, rolling and playing.
