Pressure on the global supply chain has been constant throughout the pandemic. Retailers and consumers have both experienced episodic product shortages and out-of-stocks in recent months. During these uncertain times, we are particularly grateful for a strong network of farmers, makers, and producers who are part of Community Foods: Values Every Day. Community Foods products are sourced primarily from local producers and support a resilient local economy. This has helped to insulate the co-op from the worst supply disruptions. One way to ensure our viability is to buy and share these products. A seasonal delight that may be prone to episodic shortages this year is eggnog. For eggnog lovers, why not plan ahead and make your own with eggs from local Community Foods producer Larry Schultz?  By making your own using Community Foods products, we can bolster our cooperative resiliency. Please support these food makers with your purchases. We found two great recipes that will showcase those local eggs and satisfy your annual eggnog craving!

Throughout the pandemic, we have remained committed to retaining employees and doing everything we can to serve our community. Seward Co-op staff members are eager to help you find the product you are looking for and identify alternatives for out-of-stock items. This holiday season, let’s work together to embody the cooperative principle of concern for community – be gentle with ourselves and kind to one another.

Seward Co-op staff work hard to bring you updates when we can, so be sure to check back intermittently. During the week of Dec. 6, other items that may be out of stock or intermittently available include:

–              Glass bottled juices – juice your own special order citrus by the case. Co-op owners receive a 10% discount (non-owners receive a 5% discount) on pre-ordered bulk or case items

–              Nutritional bars – try this recipe and gain more control over the sugar, salt and fat content. Pretzels can be a substitute for nuts in a pinch.

–              Some bulk nuts – try roasted squash seeds, chickpeas, edamame, or jerky instead

–              Some varieties of Muir Glen tomatoes – canned pumpkin and beets can be substitutes for canned tomatoes

–              Canned soups, various brands – whip up a batch of your own. Head over to our rotisserie chicken blog for a great stock recipe using leftovers that frequently go to waste.

–              Organic Valley milk supply continues to be intermittent – the co-op offers a variety of organic, non-dairy milks
