Mhonpaj’s Garden, the first Hmong-owned certified organic farm in Minnesota, is a nine acre vegetable farm owned by May Lee and her daughter Mhonpaj. With five acres in Stillwater and four acres in Marine on St. Croix, May and her family grow a variety of vegetables, bedding plants and herbs. On the farm, they utilize soil conservation, sustainable water usage and many other practices encompassed in USDA organic certification. In addition to farming, May spends time educating other growers about organic practices through the MN Food Association and as a Master Gardener volunteer. She and her family also share their culinary heritage through cooking demonstrations and classes.
“We not only grow produce, we also have transplants and authentic Asian varieties of greens. We are chemical free, we strive to use crop rotations, and mulch to help with soil fertility and using organic compost back into the ground along with cover crops succession throughout the seasons. We also strive to deal with pests through organic process. We believe that the earth gives back what you put in it and have successfully farmed for the last ten years.”
