Learn About Heartbeet Farm
Since 2009, Joe and Rebecca Schwen have owned and operated their family farm in Zumbro Falls, Minn. The fields that now comprise Heartbeet Farm are the same fields where Joe was raised and where he learned to farm. A few years ago, the Schwens began to cooperatively market their produce as Heartbeet Farm along with two nearby small-scale family farms, Easy Yoke and Hare & Tortoise. All three farms are dedicated to farming in healthy, holistic, and sustainable ways. Working together allows their farms to directly interact with the plants, soil, animals, and farm ecosystem while maintaining productive, efficient, and sustainable practices.
Support Local, Small-scale, Family Farms
Each of the three farms that make up Heartbeet are certified organic. The Schwens have a particular interest in soil health and dedicate time and finances toward long term soil balancing. Their long-term vision for the soil is to return the trace minerals to the soil so that their plants are healthier and their produce is sweeter, tastier, and more nutritious. Additionally, their sustainability practices have led them to employ a combination of draft horses, small tractors, woodstove heated greenhouses, and other technologies on the farm.
