Featherstone Farm is a certified organic (MOSA) CSA farm. Their CSA shares are customized for each member and include fruit, vegetables and the option of an egg share add-on. It is located in southeastern Minnesota, between Winona and Lanesboro, and was founded in 1994 by Jack Hedin and Jenni McHugh. Featherstone Farm draws its name and focus on environmental sustainability from the Featherstone Township homestead (80 miles upriver) where Jack’s great-grandfather farmed and planted trees in the 19th century.
Featherstone Farm is committed to being a fair, transparent and accountable agricultural employer, and to making farmwork a safe, respected and personally sustainable profession. It is a mid-sized, significantly mechanized farm, which balances big picture goals of ecological and human health with day-to-day realities of economics; both the need to be profitable as a foundation of sustainability, and the need to be efficient to make quality food affordable and accessible to large numbers of people. Jack, Jenni and staff of Featherstone Farm are dedicated to placing good regional food at the center of a vital rural-urban community of people; and to building soil, protecting resources, creating renewable energy and enhancing the rural environment in which it operates.
“Support a farm that pays its workers a living wage, employs all legal workers (year round local English and seasonal Spanish speaking workers, the latter of which are H2A legally documented with their travel expenses, housing and local transportation covered by the farm), uses green sustainable energy to power a large part of its warehouse and offices and practices sustainable soil building techniques in its use of the land with the mission to leave the earth in better condition over the years rather than depleting it.”
