Meetings of Seward Co-op’s Board of Directors are open to any co-op owner. Please email board@seward.coop in advance of the meeting to indicate your intention to attend. This will allow us to notify you in the event of scheduling changes. The first regular board meeting of 2020 is Tuesday, Jan. 28, at 6:15 p.m. at the Creamery, 2601 E. Franklin Ave. Co-op owners are welcome to observe; your advance RSVP is politely requested. An agenda is here.

The board has allocated time during the Jan. 28 meeting for a Hopes and Dreams discussion with guests. They are available to answer questions and provide information about cooperative governance.

East Phillips Indoor Urban Farm upcoming meeting

The East Phillips Neighborhood Institute (EPNI) continues an effort to secure land for an indoor urban farm project that would bring affordable housing, urban food production, a coffee shop and a bicycle shop to the small southside neighborhood.

The project would be part of the Hiawatha Campus expansion. The city of Minneapolis is planning to relocate and consolidate the Public Works Water Distribution Maintenance and Meter Shop operation from three sites to a centrally located facility, replacing the existing Water Distribution facility. Learn more on the city’s website.

EPNI is encouraging supporters to show up—with signs—to upcoming meetings of the Hiawatha Advisory Committee. It started as a 7.5-acres project when EPNI was negotiating the purchase of the site in 2015—and EPNI continues to hope to secure at least 2 acres for a sustainable urban farm project and save the building on the site from demolition.

Ways to Show Support
EPNI is asking for support at a community meeting Monday, June 17, at 6 p.m. at the East Phillips Park Gym, 2307 17th Ave. S., Minneapolis. Dinner will be served.

Sign a petition in support of East Phillips community plan for green jobs and green infrastructure.

The EPNI is asking folks that live in Ward 1, Ward 3 and Ward 4 to contact their councilperson and ask them to support the two-acre East Phillips Community Vision.

2017 Annual Meeting Recap

Thank you to everyone who attended the 2017 Annual Owner Meeting. This year’s meeting was held at the University of Minnesota in the Great Hall of the Coffman Memorial Union. Seward Co-op owners enjoyed live music by Kenn Wanaku and David Stenshoel, a performance by Appetite for Change, and an engaging conversation led by Diversity and Community Engagement Manager LaDonna Redmond Sanders and guest chef Tunde Wey regarding the true cost of food. We ended the night by welcoming two new directors—Vina Kay and Filiberto Nolasco Gomez and congratulating Lenny Nelson on re-election. Full election results are available here. Photos from the evening are available on our Facebook page.

Sow the Seeds Donation

This year’s heavy rains have significantly impacted many of the farms that supply natural foods cooperatives. Damage to crops is in the hundreds of thousands of dollars, and several farmers are facing the prospect of losing their farms. Impacted farms include such long-time Seward partners as Featherstone Farm, Heartbeet Farm, Hoch Orchard, Driftless Organics and more.

Co-ops around the Twin Cities and across the upper Midwest partnered to raise funds to assist these farms. Between Thursday, Nov. 17, and Wednesday, Nov. 23, Seward Co-op sold $452,249 in P6 sales, of which we committed to donate 1%, in the amount of $4,522. Additionally, generous owners and shoppers directly donated $268, bringing our combined total contribution to $4,790. Your help cultivates a stronger, healthier community; thanks to everyone who participated in this campaign to save our local farms!

Relief funds will be administered by the Cooperative Development Fund (CDS). CDS is a 501 (c) 3 charitable family of funds that advances economic development through cooperative enterprise. Their mission is to promote community, economic, and social development through cooperative enterprises.
