On Mother’s Day, we celebrate the mothers in our lives, who have nurtured and cared for us, whether they gave birth to us or stepped into our lives later down the line. This year, we’re highlighting some of the vendors at Seward Co-op who are mother/child owned.
Celebrating Mothers at Seward Co-op
Velvet Bear
Velvet Bear is comprised of Cindy Caverzagie, a former Seward Co-op Wellness employee, and her daughter, Elanor. Cindy makes her own earrings with a combination of new and recycled objects, and sources her new materials from other small business owners. Her daughter Elanor, a graphic design student at the University of Minnesota, designs and prints all of her own cards. Each design is her own original art printed on Stafford recycled card stock. Elanor is also designing a website for Velvet Bear.
Roots Essential
Roots Essential is a local, woman-owned wellness business that sells naturally-derived bath soaks, soaps, lotions, and more. Founder Evangeline Stacy grew Roots Essential from her experience as a sports massage therapist as well as her upbringing in the Philippines, where she developed passions for service and nature. Evangeline works with her mother to create Roots Essential products, which are made with all natural ingredients and a commitment to sustainability. Read more about Roots Essential here.
Wild Carrot Herbals
Mother-daughter owned Wild Carrot Herbals has been handcrafting plant-based skincare from a small town in the mountainous northeast of Oregon for more than two decades. Their line of products is based on the idea that active ingredients come from whole plants, not isolates, and they source organic ingredients whenever possible. Mother Jody Berry calls her daughter Ginger her “Chief Muse.” Read more about Wild Carrot Herbals here.
Four Elements Herbals
For more than 30 years, Jane Hawley Stevens has been crafting herbal remedies with organically grown plants from her Wisconsin farm, which form the backbone of Four Elements Herbals. Jane not only works with her daughter Sylvie, but also was inspired to create her most popular product—Look Ma No X Cream—because of her other daughter Savanna’s eczema condition.
Jane Candle Co.
Jane Candle Co. is a BIPOC/AAPI-owned business run by a daughter and mother duo in Minneapolis, Minn. Daughter Macailah started Jane Candle Co. to support her own daughter, just as she had watched her mother, Angela, also start her own business. Named for their beloved family dog, Jane Candle Co. is dedicated to making the highest quality home goods that summon a sense of warm comfort, all while being toxin-, paraben-, phthalate-, and cruelty-free, and vegan.
WishGarden
Women-owned and family-run, WishGarden was founded by Catherine Hunziker in 1979, which she now runs with her son Sam and daughter Anna. Based in Colorado, WishGarden offers a line of organic herbal remedies, including many tinctures for pregnancy and women’s health, inspired by Catherine’s early career as a midwife.
