The Center for Disease Control (CDC) has issued a food safety alert encouraging everyone to destroy onions that were grown in Chihuahua, Mexico. Onions that were grown in Chihuahua, Mexico which have been linked to salmonella infections.
Seward Co-op does not stock onions from Chiapas, Mexico. Since August, all the onions we have sold have been grown in the U.S., and most have been sourced locally. If customers still have onions they purchased from August, they should discard them.
If anyone is concerned about the safety of their onions, we can accept returns subject to our return policy—“Seward Community Co-op accepts returns for unsatisfactory purchases. All approved returns are eligible for exchange or credit. With receipt and product, returns may be issued in the form of the original purchase payment.”
What is the CDC recommending that people do with their onions?
· “Do not buy or eat any whole fresh red, white, or yellow onions if they were imported from Chihuahua, Mexico, and distributed by ProSource Inc.”
· “Throw away any whole red, white, or yellow onions you have at home that do not have a sticker or packaging.”
Note: customers who know that their sticker-less onions came from us after August can rest assured that these onions are not subject to the advisory. However, if there is any possibility that the onions came from a different source, they should probably discard them out of an abundance of caution.
