The Seward Co-op Board of Directors is asking our owners to approve a change to board compensation to include a monthly stipend for board members. In keeping with our stated goal of creating equitable economic relationships, the stipend would reflect the value that board members create for our co-op. Owner control, as enacted through the board of directors, is a distinguishing feature of a cooperative business, and as our business grows and becomes more complex, so, too, does the role of board members. Compensating board members is a reflection of the importance the co-op places on board leadership.
For more information on the proposal, read the FAQ below. If you would like to talk to a board member regarding the compensation proposal, please email board@seward.coop.
Also, consider visiting with directors in person during “Face to Face” events in the store. Check out the board page for dates and current board members.
The following language will appear on our 2013 annual ballot materials:
In compliance with the Seward Community Cooperative bylaws, the Board of Directors is asking that owners approve a change in the compensation that board members receive for their service. Currently, board members receive a 10% discount for purchases at the cooperative and the president receives a 15% discount for purchases at the cooperative.
The proposed compensation for board members of the Seward Cooperative is a monthly stipend of $400. Additionally, it is proposed that the secretary, treasurer and vice-president receive a total monthly stipend of $500 and that the president receive a total monthly stipend of $750. All board members will still be entitled to a 10% discount on purchases at the cooperative with the exception of the president who will continue to receive a 15% discount.
Upon approval of this measure, the compensation outlined above will be in effect unless changed by the owners of the co-op at a regular or a special meeting or unless the board determines that the compensation would cause financial harm to the co-op, in which case the compensation would be suspended by the board.
