SUMMARY:Art + Abolition: Memorialize the Movement\, Deepen our Commitment
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday\, June 24 from 6–7:30 p.m. outside of the Franklin and Friendship stores and streaming on Facebook for live DJs\, community art-making\, and the ceremonial donation of artists’ 2020 murals to Memorialize the Movement. \nBefore the event\, you can download our free virtual Abolition Art Kit. This kit has resources and ideas for you and your family to create your own art at home as a reminder of your commitment to anti-racism in 2021 and beyond. \n\n\nThrough the summer of 2020\, we experienced the way art can metabolize\, mobilize\, heal and inspire in the movement for racial justice. Join Seward Co-op along with Eastside\, Mississippi Market\, and TCCP Co-ops as we honor and celebrate the protest art of this past year while deepening our commitment to racial justice in our community. We’ll gather on Thursday\, June 24 for outdoor\, COVID-safe gatherings focused on art and abolition within our co-op communities. \nLast summer\, Seward Co-op invited local\, BIPOC-led artist groups to create murals on the plywood at our stores as a canvas to express emotions and grief\, and to support the community in metabolizing trauma in the wake of the murder of George Floyd. We invited the community to participate with music and chalk art. You can see photos and information on the artists from that day here. \nThe majority of the murals at Seward Co-op were weatherproofed and remained displayed at the stores over the past year. The murals at these stores continued to have positive impacts on the immediate communities surrounding the stores\, particularly the Friendship store\, given its close proximity to George Floyd Square. With permission from the artists\, Seward Co-op is now donating these works of art to Memorialize the Movement (MTM)\, a grassroots organization working to collect and preserve the protest art created in the wake of the murder of George Floyd. A small number of these were on display at the MTM mural exhibition at Phelps Park. \nOn Thursday\, June 24 from 6–7:30 p.m.\, join us outside of the Franklin and Friendship stores for music\, conversation with the artists\, and opportunities to create art and signs you can bring to future community actions or display at your home. Muralists will be doing live painting and as co-op members\, we will express our commitments to the movement in 2021 and beyond. \n \nWhat does it mean to be an abolitionist today?\nHow will we further engage in racial justice movements as co-op members?\nWhat does it mean to commit to Black liberation as a co-op community? What will we commit to? \nWe’ll also be livestreaming the event\, with conversations with Leesa Kelly\, founder of Memorialize the Movement\, Seward Co-op Board members\, and some of the artists who shared their talents with our community. Following the event\, the remaining 2020 murals will be officially donated to Memorialize the Movement. \nEveryone is welcome and RSVP not required; however\, if you register below you will receive an email from Eventbrite that contains an event reminder and livestream link before the event. \nThe event series “Co-op Community Conversations: Exploring the intersection of racial\, social\, and food justice” is presented by Eastside Food Co-op\, Mississippi Market Food Co-op\, Seward Community Co-op\, and Twin Cities Co-op Partners as a way to examine and connect our cooperative values with social justice movements.

SUMMARY:Cooking with Koshiki: Agedashi Tofu & Maze Gohan (Virtual class)
DESCRIPTION:Agedashi Tofu was the ultimate best-selling appetizer at Koshiki’s former restaurant\, Tanpopo Noodle Shop.  What made this dish so special was the marriage of creaminess of tofu\, crunchiness of skin\, savory broth\, and fresh ginger. It is still one of Koshiki’s family favorites to make at home.  Along with Agedashi Tofu\, we will prepare Maze Gohan\, Japanese dirty rice made with carrots and burdock on the side. \nKoshiki Smith\, The Japanese Kitchen

SUMMARY:Seward Co-op 2021 Annual Owner Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Tuesday\, October 26 via Zoom from 6:30-8 p.m. for the Annual Co-op Owner Meeting. As we begin a year of celebrating our 50th anniversary as a co-op\, we’ll reflect on who we are as part of a broader cooperative movement working for justice and the abolition of oppressive systems.\n \nRegistration for our Annual Owner Meeting is now closed\, but you can use the link below to access the Zoom webinar at 6:30pm: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/86202762926 \nIf you would prefer to listen to the webinar over phone\, you can do so by calling (312) 626-6799 / Webinar ID: 862 0276 2926. \nOur 2020 meeting featured a dynamic panel of artists and activists; and as a co-op we expressed our shared intention to articulate a vision of community that is free from white supremacy. Through conversation\, song\, and movement\, the panel centered on the co-op’s role in the movement for racial justice and liberation in our communities—a movement that holds parallel values of abolition with cooperative history and principles. Minutes from last year’s annual meeting are here. View this year’s agenda here.  \nCelebrating 50 Years: Seward Co-op within the Broader Movement for Abolition and Liberation\nThis year’s meeting will feature Jessica Gordon Nembhard\, Professor of Community Justice and Social Economic Development in the Department of Africana Studies at John Jay College\, City University of New York and author of Collective Courage: A History of African American Cooperative Economic Thought and Practice. Jessica will join Seward Co-op owners\, BOD members and local co-op innovators in conversation about how co-ops can be a manifestation of abolition. \nThe event will kick-off a year of exploring our own evolution as a co-op over the past 50 years—and who we want to be 50 years in the future. \nThis event was originally shared in our eNews and Sprout! starting at 6 PM\, and has been updated to reflect the updated time.

SUMMARY:Co-op Community Conversations | Connecting To The Land
DESCRIPTION:Join Twin Cities food co-ops and Native America community leaders Hope Flanagan\, Neely Snyder\, and Vanessa Casillas for a conversation about the interconnected relationships between land\, water\, and food systems in Minnesota. We’ll discuss the impact of environmental health on Indigenous foods and what you can do to support food access in Native communities. RSVP for this virtual conversation at the link below! \nMeet the panelists \nHope Flanagan (Seneca) is from the turtle clan. She is an elder who teaches about plants and wild plant gathering. She is also a storyteller\, whose stories were passed to her from Ona KingBird from Red Lake reservation. She has taught and worked in the Twin Cities Native Community since the late 70’s. Most recently\, Hope taught in an Ojibwe Immersion classroom for ten years\, and prior to that as a Storyteller for Minneapolis Public Schools in drug and alcohol prevention for six years. She has worked at DWH since 2009 and transitioned to a year round position in 2018. \n \nNeely Snyder is an enrolled member of St. Croix Chippewa and a direct descendent of Red Lake Nation and Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe. Her passion is building stronger and healthier Native American communities. She grew up in the Twin Cities area and brings a wealth of experience in nonprofit management and administration at organizations such as Native Americans in Philanthropy\, MN Urban Area Health Education Center with University of Minnesota Physicians\, East Side Neighborhood Services\, and most recently\, the American Indian Cancer Foundation. Neely holds a Bachelor’s degree in Media Business from the Minnesota School of Business. She and her husband raised three children in Blaine\, a northern suburb of Minneapolis. Her volunteer activities include serving on the Board of Directors at The Family Partnership and the Spring Lake Park School District’s American Indian Parent Advisory Committee. \n \nVanessa Casillas is a citizen of the Ho-Chunk Nation and a bricklayer by trade. When she moved to Minneapolis from Chicago in February 2020\, her passion for food sovereignty led her to work with her hands in a different way: baking using Indigenous ingredients. Through her work expanding on the internship curriculum at a culinary training program in the local Native community\, she was able to highlight land-based learning practices like growing ancestral foods from seed and connecting with community partnerships to facilitate plant ID and foraging walks.
