2020 Virtual CSA Fair

Join us in a virtual celebration of farms that provide our community with delicious food throughout the growing season. We are featuring 25+ local CSA farms here on our website and on social media, showing what life has been like at the farms this past year and the adaptations farmers have had to make. We provide all the information for you to choose a CSA that works for you and your household. Some farms allow customization of CSA shares, and there is a variety options to fit your needs (half-shares, weekly purchase options, etc.)

During this time of crisis and supply chain disruption, we need community-based farmers and producers more than ever. Invest in the people who grow and harvest our food. In addition to shopping at the co-op, Community Supported Agriculture offers individuals and families a direct way to support local growers.

Where the Driftless Region meets the North Woods, just outside Wheeler, Wis., Lauren and Caleb Langworthy manage Blue Ox Farm. We manage a 120-ewe flock of sheep and small beef herd in a managed rotational grazing system. This type of management mimics natural systems and provides for good animal health and welfare, habitat for local biodiversity, regional water quality improvement, and carbon sequestration. The Blue Ox farmers also focus on farmer and eater education and advocacy for food system policies that support family farms, local eating, and the strength of our communities. We offer whole lamb shares and quarter beef shares to members which can be custom cut with the eater’s cooking preferences in mind. This supports our ethic of ensuring the whole animal is utilized and offers exciting culinary opportunities for member families. We’re happy to support new members as they navigate the process of purchasing local whole-animal meat shares. Thank you for supporting the family farmers of our region – however you eat!

Hmong American Farmers Association

West St. Paul, MN
CSA Type: Vegetables, Flowers
Drop Locations:
YMCA Downtown Minneapolis

Today, Hmong American farmers are leading the Twin Cities local food economy, making up more than 50% of all the farmers in metropolitan farmers markets. Hmong farmers are at the center of a Minnesota-based local foods economy that according to AgStar Financial Services generates over $250 million in annual sales. Without Hmong farmers, this explosion of awareness and interest in local foods and small-scale farming in Minnesota would not be possible.

In 2011, a group of Hmong American farming families formed the Hmong American Farmers Association (HAFA) because we believed the best people to support Hmong farmers are Hmong farmers themselves and that we are all lifted up when those who are affected by an unfair food system lead the change we seek. We formed with the mission to advance the prosperity of Hmong American farmers through cooperative endeavors, capacity building and advocacy.

The HAFA CSA is not simply a food delivery service, but rather a social contract rooted in community, mutuality, and stewardship of the land and the local economy—the main pillars of the community-wealth-building movement. Each week you will receive a box of produce and an e-newsletter with stories from the HAFA farm. We’ll provide recipes to help you know what to do with the unique vegetables that make our CSA special. The vegetable shares are available as full and half shares. A full share will feed about 6-8 people and a half share will feed about 2-4 people.

Shared Ground Farmers’ Cooperative

St. Paul, MN
CSA Type: Vegetables
Drop Locations:
Friendship store, Big River Yoga

Shared Ground Farmers’ Co-op is a marketing and distribution cooperative owned by seven farms in the Twin Cities region. Shared Ground provides produce to our local community through a CSA, as well as via several local food co-ops and the Minneapolis and St. Paul public schools. Shared Ground Co-op is owned and run by a diverse group of farmers from the Latino, Anglo, and Hmong communities. One of our core objectives is making environmentally sustainable farming a living wage job, especially for minority, immigrant, and beginning farmers. Shared Ground views its marketing and access to local food markets as an instrument of social justice, and a way for farmers with limited resources to gain more stable income and build their leadership skills through participation in a member-owned and member-governed enterprise.

Our CSA is a little different from many others because it does not come from a single farm. Instead, your membership supports a group of diverse farmers who are committed to working together to improve our local food system. Many of our farmers might not be able to direct-market all of their produce due to language barriers, size of their operation, etc. By working together, we can use all of our strengths to bring the people of the Twin Cities high quality food while supporting farmers.

While our farm is in it’s sixth year of production, we are not new to this work. Prior to starting Steady Hand Farm, we had 8 seasons of CSA experience including 3 seasons of management. We look forward to incorporating our children into as much of the work as they want, knowing that there will be times that they force us to slow our pace and tend to their worlds. Certainly this is a challenge, but one that we believe brings a richness to our work and the process of growing your food.
